"Beginning August 1, 2022, minor modifications to the Scouts BSA requirements for the ranks of Scout through Star will take effect. Scouts may continue using the existing requirements for the rank on which they are currently working, or they may choose to use the new requirements. Scouts must use the new requirements once they advance to their next rank. On January 1, 2023, all Scouts must use only the new requirements.

New California Law: All Youth Organization Volunteers Must Complete State Background Check and Training

AB 506 Update: As a Scouting volunteer, you understand the importance of keeping children safe. A recent bill (AB 506) was passed by the State of California requiring volunteers and staff of Youth Service Organizations to complete training in reporting child abuse and neglect, and undergo Live Scan background checks. AB 506 is effective immediately. All staff and volunteers 18 years of age or older and who have direct contact with, or supervision of, children for more than 16 hours a month or 32 hours per year must complete a Live Scan background check (the digital version of inked fingerprinting) and online mandated reporter training. What does this mean to me as a parent? All BSA registered adults must complete the state’s training to participate in any Scouting activity, including merit badge counselors. Generally, parents who only attend troop meetings are exempt from training.

Please follow the next 3 steps to ensure your compliance in helping to keep Scouts safe.

Make an appointment and bring the livescan form with you. Fees paid to the livescan provider are charged by the provider and government, BSA has no control over these fees.
